Goals

The main objective of the APFNet-UBC Americas Office is to encourage regional level cooperation in sustainable forest management and rehabilitation in North and South America. The Office will function to

 

Based on APFNet’s Strategic Plan for 2016-2020, the Office will seek to achieve the following goals:

  • Contribute to the achievement of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation’s (APEC) aspirational goal of increasing forest cover by at least 20 million hectares of all types of forests by 2020;
  • Help to enhance forest carbon stocks and improve forest quality and productivity by promoting rehabilitation of existing but degraded forests, and reforestation and afforestation of suitable cleared lands in the region;
  • Help to reduce forest loss and degradation and the associated greenhouse gas emissions by strengthening sustainable forest management and enhancing biodiversity conservation; and
  • Help to increase the socio-economic benefits of forests in the region.

 

The Americas Office is currently working to identify individuals or groups in research institutions in pursuit of objectives. The Office will function to support:

  • Network establishment and promotion;
  • Project development and management;
  • Promotion of academic exchange and sustainable forestry management education
